    ASU National Honors and Accomplishments for 1996-97

    National Coaches of the Year: Bruce Snyder (consensus), Sheila McInerney (Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Wilson); Linda Vollstedt (GOLFWEEK)

    National Champions (Individual): Freshman Elizabeth Reid became the school's fifth gymnast to capture an individual national championship with her finish on the balance beam. She tied for the title.

    NCAA Team Champions: Women's Golf Team (ASU has now won four of the past five NCAA Championships)

    Pac-10 Coaches of the Year: Lee Roy Smith (Wrestling/Co-Coach of the Year); Sheila McInerney (Women's Tennis); Bruce Snyder (Football)

    CoSIDA GTE Academic All-Americans: Chris Hanell (Men's Golf) and Kellee Booth (Women's Golf); First-Team

    Sun Angel Foundation Athletes of the Year: Chris Hanell (Men's Golf) and Alyssa Johnson (Softball)

    Sun Angel Foundation Football Chairman's Award: Derek Smith

    Bill Kajikawa Varsity "A" Association Student-Athletes of the Year: Devin Kendall (Football) and Adra Hysong (Women's Track)

    Heather Farr Award: Chris Jeffrey (Women's Swimming)

    Wings of Gold Student-Athlete of the Year: Kellee Booth (Women's Golf)

    Pac-10 Medal of Honor Recipients: Chris Hanell (Men's Golf) and Alyssa Johnson (Softball)

    GOLFWEEK Men's Collegiate Golfer Player of the Year: Chris Hanell

    Chevrolet College Football Offensive Player of the Year: Jake Plummer

    Dave Williams Award (top senior student-athlete in men's golf): Scott Johnson (Previous ASU winners include Phil Mickelson (1992), Todd Demsey (1995) and Joey Snyder (1996).

    Dinah Shore Trophy (top student-athlete in women's golf): Kellee Booth

    More than 200 people attended the December student-athlete luncheon to honor 27 student-athletes receiving their degrees in mid-year.

    Finished 13th in the Sears Directors' Cup with 571 points, which was a sixth-place finish among Pac-10 schools.

    Previous Sears Directors' Cup Finishes: 1994 (10th); 1995 (12th), 1996 (21st).
