TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State Gymnastics opened the 2017 season on Sunday, hosting the program's annual Maroon & Gold Intrasquad Meet. Split into two respective squads, the youthful Gym Devils shined under the direction of first-year head coach Jay Santos.
After trailing 3-0, following the first rotation, the Maroon team rallied back to bring the contest to an even 8-8, final.
"It was great to get out of the gym and finally get out on the floor today in front of our fans," head coach Jay Santos said. "At this point of the year our pre-season has gone on for a while so it's always really exciting to do a competition event like this in our arena."
Team Gold got off to a tremendous start on vault earning a three-point sweep, courtesy of efforts by Jessica Ginn, Mekayla Jones, and Katelyn Lentz.
Maroon, which featured Corinne Belkoff, Morgan Hart, Ashley Szafranski, and Graycee Rushton, quickly recovered and outscored the Gold team 3-1 on bars, to cut their deficit to 4-3.
"I think overall the team did a good job today and showed some real promise and improvement in several areas," Santos said. "We have a young squad and they have to learn how to handle this environment and for the most part we did pretty well. Bars was a definite bright spot today - they did a great job on that event and I'm really happy with their progress so far."
Team Maroon continued their ascent on the scoreboard, as the squad competing on beam outscored Gold 3-2 to bring the matchup to a 6-6 tie.
"We did have some struggles on beam, which is uncharacteristic for what they have been doing in the gym and we looked a little tired on a couple floor routines," Santos said. "We will need to work hard in several areas over the next couple of weeks to make some improvements and be more prepared for the start of season against Iowa State."
Both teams impressed in their respective floor routines splitting the scoring two points apiece, culminating in an 8-8 tie.
The Gym Devils will open the 2017 season on Friday, Jan. 6 at Iowa State. The first home meet of the year is slated for Saturday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. MT against UC Davis at Wells Fargo Arena. ASU will also play host to Pac-12 foes UCLA (Feb. 4), Stanford (Feb. 18), and Utah (Feb. 25), and a tri-meet with non-conference foes Sacramento State and Bridgeport (March 10).
