TEMPE, Ariz. – Seniors Sophie Brunner, Quinn Dornstauder and Kelsey Moos combined for 38 points and 26 rebounds to help lead the Arizona State women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 69-63 upset of No. 19 Florida in the championship game of the ASU Classic.
Brunner was named the ASU Classic MVP for the third time in her four-year Sun Devil career after averaging 12.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals while connecting on 62.5 percent of her field goals during the two-game tournament. On Sunday Brunner, who did not play in last year's ASU Classic due to injury, tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.
Moos posted 11 points to go with eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists, while Dornstauder dropped 13 points to go with eight boards. Kianna Ibis added 12 points, four rebounds and two steals while Reili Richardson scored nine points and accounted for three assists and three steals. Both Dornstauder and Richardson joined Brunner on the ASU Classic All-Tournament Team.
ASU grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, which led to 16 second-chance points. After forcing 22 turnovers in Saturday's win over Boston University, the Sun Devils came through with another relentless effort on Sunday as the Gators turned the ball over 25 times. ASU would capitalize on Florida's miscues, turning them into 29 points on the offensive end.
The Sun Devils (5-2) shot 93 percent (13-14) and outscored the Gators 30-12 in the fourth quarter to erase what was a 12-point deficit at the outset of the final 10 minutes Dornstauder (4-4 FGs, nine points) and Brunner (4-4 FGs, eight points) combined for 17 of ASU's points in the fourth quarter.
Brunner and Ibis teamed up to score nine points in the first 2:16 of the fourth quarter to get ASU within five points. The Gators (6-2) would bounce back to take a pair of seven-point leads, the second of which came following a jumper by Eleanna Christinaki with 6:12 remaining.
The Sun Devils would score eight of the next 10 points to get within one after Brunner's jumper with just under four minutes left.
Dornstauder, who scored all nine of her fourth-quarter points in the final five minutes, gave ASU the lead on a 3-point play with 2:54 remaining.
The Gators would tie the game two more times before consecutive baskets by Robbi Ryan and Dornstauder put the Sun Devils up 67-63 with 33 seconds remaining. One more defensive stop and two free throws by Richardson clinched the win for the Sun Devils.
The Gators, who shot 58 percent through three quarters and 50 percent for the game, scored the first six points of the game. The Sun Devils would respond by scoring the next seven points.
