GOLD CANYON, Ariz. – The #14 Sun Devils played their first outside competition of the spring season, a one-round dual vs. the University of Denver at Superstition Mountain, shooting their lowest single round of the season thus far as a team (278).
"I'm very pleased with our effort today," said Missy Farr-Kaye, head coach of the Sun Devils. "Shooting 10-under out of the gate is a great start to our spring. I was especially proud of Madison Kerley and Roberta Liti for shooting 5-under 67's today. We enjoyed playing near home at Superstition Mountain and look forward to our first 54-hole tournament of the spring in two weeks."
Monica Vaughn, Linnea Strom, Olivia Mehaffey, Sophia Zeeb, and Roberta Liti competed towards the team score while while Madison Kerley played as an individual. All six Sun Devils shot at or below par.
Liti and Kerley led the way for ASU, each shooting 67, good for each of their lowest career rounds. The feat marked Kerley's first sub-70 score of the season while it was the first below-70 score of Liti's career.
Mehaffey matched her career low, shooting a 71, the same single round score she tallied in round two at Annika Intercollegiate, her second ever collegiate round.
Denver's best competitior on the day, Marielle Bruun shot a 73 while both of the Pioneers' individual golfers in Katharin Baratta and Lauren Whyte shot a 72. As a team, Denver shot a 16-over-par 304.
The Sun Devils have two weeks to finish preparation before starting their spring schedule in earnest at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. Feb. 12-14.
