HAMILTON, N.Y. – For the third time in as many weekends, the Sun Devil hockey team hits the road for a two-game series at Colgate University, as the largest school in Division I hockey meets one of the smallest.
Arizona State (1-4-1) is coming off a morale-boosting performance against Nebraska-Omaha just days ago, in which they rallied from three separate deficits before winning the shootout over the Mavericks. They now transition to Colgate (2-2-2), who has yet to win a game since their two victories to open the season on Sept. 30 and Oct. 6.
"Colgate is a really young team and returned a lot of their team, just like us," said head coach Greg Powers. "They're going to be tough to beat and have gotten off to a really good start. Coach [Don] Vaughan is a seasoned vet and will have them ready to go. They have a brand-new building that's a year old, so we're excited to go see that and play in it. They're a historically good hockey program. Not much has changed from last year, just like us."
These two programs met in 2016-17 in Tempe and split the series, with ASU capturing the first game by a score of 5-4 followed by the Raiders taking the second, 3-2.
Redshirt junior Louie Rowe had one of his better games of the season in that first meeting, netting two goals. Then-freshman defenseman Brinson Pasichnuk and forward Tyler Busch both had two-point performances as well. Rowe finished the two-game set with two goals and an assist.
Between the pipes, junior Ryland Pashovitz got the start and win in game one, followed by the 3-2 loss in game two. Colgate's returning goaltender Colton Point was in net for the victory in game two, who currently holds a 2-0-2 record with a .949 save percentage and 1.68 goals against average. The Sun Devils have yet to name their starter for game one.
This trip is just the first of four the Sun Devils will have to make back east this season, versus the six made in 2016-17. ASU went 5-6-0 in the 11 games in the eastern time zone.
In their first season in the new The Class of 1965 Arena, the Raiders christened it with a 6-7-3 record at home. They ultimately finished the 2016-17 season with a 9-22-6 record.
Last weekend, defensemen Jakob Stridsberg and Jacob Wilson, as well as forward Brett Gruber, recorded at least a point in each game against UNO. Several Sun Devils captured their first collegiate point, including goals from Max Balinson and Gvido Jansons.
Sophomore netminder Joey Daccord totaled 42 saves on 46 shots, including a highlight-reel save that made SportsCenter's Top-10 at No. 6 and NCAA Hockey's No. 1 Play of the Week.
While the game officially goes down as a tie, the Sun Devils roll into this road trip with a new-found energy.
Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m. (ET)/4 p.m. (AZ), with an afternoon start on Saturday at 4 p.m. (ET)/1 p.m. (AZ).
