HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. – After finishing the first round on top and sliding into second place at the end of day one, No. 4 Arizona State, the reigning national champions, ended victorious with their first team win of the season at Northwestern's Windy City Collegiate Classic.
Junior Linnea Strom (208/-5) led the individual field for the majority, finishing ultimately in second place in a closely contested race for the top spot. No. 8 Oklahoma State's Maddie McCrary (207/-6) earned the individual crown. Strom's second-place finish was her second consecutive top-10 finish of 2017-18.
Olivia Mehaffey shot a career-low 65 in round one on Monday en route to her first top-10 finish of the season, her highest finish since last season's NCAA Regionals, ending the three-round tournament in sixth place (212/-1). Just outside the top-10, Roberta Liti (216/+3) ended in a three-way tie for 12th.
"We are really excited about winning Windy City, hosted by Northwestern, since it's a great tournament on a really good golf course with a good field," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "It was a tough day of competing as we were neck and neck with Oklahoma State all day. This was a complete team effort by all five players and I am very proud of how each one of them competed today."
Raquel Olmos Ros (+7/220) and Madison Kerley (222/+9) finished tied for 24th and 32nd, respectively.
With the win, the Sun Devils have finished in the top-3 in 10 of their last 11 tournaments, including the last four straight dating back to last season.
"Linnea came up just shy of a win but played beautifully. We are looking forward to getting home and getting some rest before we leave again on Saturday for Austin."
As a team, the Sun Devils (+1) finished three strokes ahead of No. 8 Oklahoma State (+4) in second and 13 ahead of No. 10 Michigan State (+14) in third.
ASU has a short turnaround before the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas next week (Oct. 9-10). With a busy month of October, the Sun Devils play four tournaments, including the Pac-12 Preview (Oct. 23-24) and East Lake Cup (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) later this month to close the fall season.
