TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil swim teams, including the No. 8-ranked men's team, opened the 2017-18 competition season on Friday in the teams' annual Maroon & Gold Intrasquad and in a closely contested meet, maroon defeated gold, 205-188.
On the women's side, the margin was even closer, with maroon coming out on top, 99-98, while the maroon team's men won, 106-90.
"Across the board, we had very good performances," said head coach Bob Bowman. "I was very pleased on the women's side. We had a lot of great swimming and I'm very pleased with how the women stepped up."
Several Sun Devils achieved NCAA B-cuts including Patrick Park's winning 100 fly, Cameron Craig's 100 free, Zach Poti's 100 back, and Christian Lorenz's 100 breast. Marlies Ross' winning 200 IM was just .27 off the B-cut.
Women's newcomers dominated the distance events as Emma Nordin and Caitlyn Wilson finished first and second in the women's 1000 free while Erica Laning touched first in the 500.
Katherine Wagner and Fanny Teijonsalo were each part of a winning relay team, Wagner the 200 medley and Teijonsalo the 400 free.
In two weeks, Silja Kansakoski, Kendall Dawson, Cameron Craig, and Christian Lorenz will represent the Sun Devils in Los Angeles in the USA Swimming/Pac-12 College Challenge, where USA Swimming and Pac-12 standouts will compete in a dual competition.
The two-day competition takes place Oct. 21-22 on USC's campus, with the Pac-12 Networks broadcasting the event in a mix between the national and regional networks. Both days will also be available on the Pac-12 Now app and Pac-12.com live stream.
Swim and dive officially opens the season at home Oct. 27 vs. Utah (4 pm) and Oct. 28 vs. Florida State (11 am), kicking off a streak four straight home meets to open the regular season.
