TEMPE – Savannah Slaysman advanced to the semifinal in the Maroon bracket, and joined Sasa Klanecek for a dominant doubles performance Saturday at the second day of the Thunderbird Invitational.
Slaysman and Klanecek didn't drop a set en route to their 6-0 sweep of the Sooners' Stripp/Romero.
While Klanecek's day ended after the doubles session in the morning, as she was replaced in the maroon tournament bracket by a woman from Cal by coach's decision, Slaysman went on to win her only singles match of the day.
Slaysman took on TCU's Norris, who played the extra match in Friday's opening round.
She didn't let yesterday's unexpected early exit from the main draw affect her, opening the match with an easy 6-1 win over the Horned Frog junior.
In the second set, Slaysman put a bow on the victory, shutting out Norris 6-0 for the match win.
It was her second win of the weekend and it brings her fall win total to four. She will take to the court again tomorrow in the final day of competition against Notre Dame's Allison Miller.
Miller got to the semifinal after she won her opening round match in the main draw against Kati Kurakas from San Diego, falling in the round of 16 to Emilee Duong of Illinois, then rebounding Friday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Maria Smith of Cal.
The 2017 Thunderbird Invitational champion will be from the University of Illinois, thanks to two Fighting Illini storming their way through the main draw and into the Sunday's final.
Duong advanced from the bottom-half and Jaclyn Switkes came from the top-half, having taken down the No. 1 seed back on Friday afternoon.
The tournament concludes Sunday and begins at 8:30 a.m. once again with doubles play.
ASU's duo, depending on the status of Klanecek, will face Cal's Smith/Glozman. The Golden Bears pairing is 1-1 on the weekend.
