TEMPE – The final day of the Thunderbird Invitational saw Savannah Slaysman and Sasa Klanecek win their third doubles match of the weekend to give the Sun Devil duo a 3-0 record at Whiteman Tennis Center this fall.
Slaysman and Klanecek took down Pac-12 rival Smith/Glozman of California in a back-and-forth 6-4 match on court one. This weekend was the first time the young Sun Devils had played together as a pairing, but the unfamiliarity didn't slow down the two of them as they rolled through the competition this weekend in Tempe.
The 3-0 record brings ASU's total doubles record this fall to 15-6, and no pairing has had more than one loss. Pairings with Klanecek are now 8-2.
In individual play, Klanecek sat out, and Slaysman fell to Notre Dame's Allison Miller 6-1, 6-3.
The University of Illinois had an outstanding weekend that was capped off with an all Illini championship round in Tempe.
Emilee Duong came up against her teammate Jaclyn Switkes and walked away with the 2017 Thunderbird Invitational crown, winning in straight sets 7-6(2), 7-5.
Third place was also claimed by the Fighting Illini as Daniela Pedraza Novak handily defeated Simran Sethi of Oklahoma in the third-place match 6-2, 6-2.
The completion of the Thunderbird Invitational marks the last time ASU will play in Tempe until the new year. Sunday also was the final day of ASU's fall season.
