COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Arizona State men's hockey team is seeing stripes. After taming the Princeton Tigers in the final game at home last weekend, the Sun Devils face a second Tiger squad this weekend at Colorado College in their second trip to Colorado Springs this season.
The Sun Devils (4-9-3) split the home series against Princeton last weekend, continuing their streak of never being swept at Oceanside since moving to Division I at eight-straight. In the first game of the contest, the Devils suffered only their second shutout at Oceanside, but ended up having the final say the next night with a 4-3 win in overtime.
"We've been at home for a while now, so it will be nice to get back out on the road together against a really good program in a great playing environment like CC," said head coach Greg Powers. "Coach Haviland has done a tremendous job rebuilding that program, and this will be a huge challenge on the road playing a top-15 ranked team in the Pairwise. We're really looking to head into the winter break with some momentum off of the win versus Princeton with a really good team effort this weekend."
In the absence of captains Dylan Hollman and Louie Rowe in game two, sophomores Tyler Busch and Brinson Pasichnuk debuted with patches and played their part. The duo contributed to the 'W' with a goal and assist from Busch and two assists by Pasichnuk.
Busch is the second-leading scorer through 16 games with five goals and five assists, along with three tallies in the last five games.
Redshirt senior David Norris' unassisted, game-winning goal made for a new personal record and milestone. In netting two of the four goals against Princeton, it marked the first time Norris scored more than one goal in a game during his NCAA tenure.
The Sun Devils' leading scorer Brett Gruber earned an assist on the game-tying, power-play goal with 57 seconds left in regulation, as his shot was redirected by freshman Johnny Walker to send the Devils to overtime. He boasts eight assists and three goals in 16 games.
Walker's four goals and three assists makes him the leading scorer amongst his freshman class, followed by defenseman and roommate Jacob Wilson with one goal and four assists.
Goaltender Joey Daccord continued his command of the crease, serving as an anchor for the young Sun Devil squad. He travels to Colorado with 30-plus saves in seven-straight games and a .924 save percentage over that span.
According to the USCHO.com poll, Colorado College (7-7-2) becomes the sixth team the Sun Devils face that are either ranked or receiving votes. As coach Powers mentioned, they are also ranked No. 15 in the Pairwise ranking, which predicts the top-16 teams to make the NCAA tournament.
The duel in the Rocky Mountains is the first time that Colorado College and ASU will meet on the ice.
Last weekend, the Tigers visited their neighbors and then-No. 1 Denver and snapped a 14-game losing streak to the reigning 2017 NCAA Champions. The battle dubbed 'The Gold Pan' went to overtime in both games, 4-4 and 1-1, but CC walked away with an extra point in the conference standings after netting a goal in the second overtime in game one.
This is the program's best start through 16 games since their 8-7-1 start in 2012-13.
In that game, forward Mason Bergh scored one goal and assisted on two more to move into the top spot as the Tigers leading goal scorer. In 16 games, the junior has collected 10 goals, including a hat-trick against Alaska Anchorage earlier in the season.
Bergh's partner in crime, point-leader Nick Holloran, has scored at least one point in 12 of 16 games this season for seven goals and 15 assists, totaling 22 points. He scored two goals for the first time this season against Denver.
Bergh and Holloran accounted for three of the four goals scored in their historic win against Denver.
The Tigers sophomore netminder Alex Leclerc guarded the net for 30-plus saves in the last three games, including 71 total saves in the series at Denver. He holds an average 2.80 goals against and .913 save percentage through 16 starts this season, and was named the NCHC Goalie of the Week.
Saturday's puck drop is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. MST, with Sunday's being a matinee showdown at 2:07 p.m. MST. Saturday will be televised on CET / XFINITY 900, while both will be live streamed on NCHC.tv.
