LINCOLN, Neb. – For the second-straight day at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, redshirt junior Maggie Ewen and junior sprinter Drelan Bramwell stamped their names atop the results on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
Once again, Ewen picked up another first-place finish in the throws with the top mark in the women's shot put at 17.25m (56-07.25). While it was not her personal best or season best, the All-American still holds the 3rd-best mark in the country to date and top in the MPSF.
"On the women's side, Maggie is clearly the star of the team," said head coach Greg Kraft. "But we have other people starting to step up. Kaylee Antill as a freshman is contributing, Ashley Weber had her first 15-meter shot put in years, and Darreyl Woodson had a lifetime best in the triple jump. We're making baby steps and getting more pieces added to the team. We'll have a big weekend in New Mexico and Iowa State this week, and then we'll have a pretty good idea of what our team looks like for the Mountain Pacific Championships."
On the track, Bramwell blazed to third place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.257, which now ranks him 9th all-time in ASU history. It also now places him 39th in the country. The junior transfer also crossed the line in fifth in the men's 60-meter dash final with a time of 6.832.
In the distance events, freshman Michael Coccia placed fifth in his section and 15th overall with a time of 4:15.59 – a new personal and collegiate best.
New Sun Devil and local product Christine Williford ran in the rare 600-meter dash and placed first in her section and ninth overall with a time of 1:33.17.
The women's and men's 4x400 relay squads both finished in the middle of the pack, placing 8th and 6th, respectively. Sophomore Sierra Irvin returned to run the anchor leg of the race with teammates Williford, Melese Crozier and Sha'Maya Flanagan. The men dominated their heat, galloping to a whopping four second victory.
Back in the field events, senior Tom Anderson podiumed with a third-place throw of 18.00m (59-00.75) for a season best. Fellow senior Kyle Long also performed well just behind Anderson in fifth place at 17.23m (56-06.50).
Sophomore Darreyl Woodson leapt to a new personal best in the triple jump, placing seventh with a mark of 12.35m (40-06.25).
Also in the jumps, redshirt sophomore Joey Bryant placed fifth with a clearance of 2.10m (6-10.75) in the men's high jump. While not a personal best – 2.14m – the transfer continues to move the bar higher under the guidance of coach Kraft.
"On the men's side, I think it was steady and even," said Kraft. "We started yesterday with the weight throw and Kyle Long had a lifetime best. Joey (Bryant) is making great progress in the long jump and the high jump. That was a nice start for us. Today, Michael Julian getting his first half mile out of the way was big, and getting a couple nice miles out of Michael Coccia and Brandon Boys was also good to see. It's always nice having the mile relay. We didn't get in the fast heat, but we dominated our section and ran a clean, even 3:11. I was pleased with that."
The Devils won't enjoy the luxury of another weekend off, as a majority of the team will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico next weekend for the annual Don Kirby Invitational. The distance squad will send their athletes to the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
