ALBUEQUERQUE, N.M./AMES, Iowa – The Sun Devil track & field program splits up to different meets for the first time this season, as the distance squad travels to the Iowa State Classic while the remaining events compete at the Don Kirby Invitational.
Several Devils will open up their 2017 season in their primary events, while a new face will wear the maroon and gold for the first time.
"It's the same story this weekend, we just keep adding pieces week by week," said head coach Greg Kraft. "It'll be no different with a number of the distance kids stepping up at Iowa State in trying to get seed times for the Mountain Pacific meet and just trying to see where their fitness is. In New Mexico, it's to continue the progress that we've had."
On the men's side, ASU adds the services of former Oregon State wide receiver Paul Lucas. The Phoenix-native and Mountain Pointe High School product will run in the 60-meter dash this weekend after transferring just two weeks ago.
He'll compete side-by-side with junior Drelan Bramwell, who finished fifth at the Husker Invitational and third in the 200-meter event. In the 60-meter prelim event, he ran a new personal best of 6.79, and his 200 time of 21.26 ranks 43rd nationally.
In the men's 400-meter dash, senior Herb Polk is aiming for a breakout weekend to continue to climb the indoor list. He currently holds the 16th-fastest time in the country at 46.86 – less than a second off the top national time.
Twin brothers Kyle and Blake Elliott open up their season in the 800-meter run in New Mexico as well. Kyle ran in the 600-meter event at the NAU Friday Night Duels with a time of 1:24.24, and holds a personal best of 1:53.93 in the 800-meter.
In the distance events, senior leader CJ Albertson opens up in the 5k event at the Iowa State Classic. He currently holds a personal best time of 13:58.59 set last year.
For the women, junior Shaunie Morrison gets back to work in the 60-meter hurdles after not competing in Nebraska.
The women's 4x400 relay will see a shake-up due to freshman Christine Williford competing in Iowa State. Senior La Troya Franklin will step back into the anchor role for the women's team.
Over in the field events, redshirt junior Maggie Ewen aims to continue her steady climb up the list in the shot put and weight throw. She currently holds the 3rd-best mark in the shot put and 10th-best in the weight throw in the country.
On the runway, senior Keyasia Tibbs makes her second appearance in her primary events, as she competes in the triple and long jump after resting a minor injury over the last two weeks.
Back in Ames, Iowa, Chelsey Albertson goes the distance in the 5k event for the first time this season as well. She competed in the 3k event at the Texas A&M Aggie Invite nearly three weeks ago and finished third.
The Devils have just one more meet following this weekend to earn qualifying marks for the MPSF Indoor Conference Championships in Seattle, Wash. on Feb. 24-25.
