TEMPE, Ariz. – After quite an opening weekend to the outdoor season, the Arizona State track & field team returns to action at Sun Angel Stadium for the two-day Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational starting Friday, March 24.
The eight-team, conference dual includes ASU, Arizona, Cal and UCLA against Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Penn State. In 2016, the Big Ten won the invitational on both the men's and women's side, while ASU finished in 2nd out of the four conference contenders.
Several Sun Devils will open up in the outdoor season for the first time, while others continue to improve on personal bests and potential national records as Maggie Ewen did just a week ago.
Ewen, who earned USTFCCCA National Women's Athlete of the Week as well as Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week for her hammer throw performance, will again compete this week in the event. She will also open up in the discus throw for the first time this season. She currently holds the fourth-best mark in ASU history, which she set last year at the ASU Sun Angel Classic.
After over a year off from competition, sophomore distance runner Samantha Ortega may appear in the women's 5,000-meter event. Ortega hasn't competed in an event in the maroon and gold since January of 2016 due to injury.
Fellow distance runner Jenna Maack also returns to the fold in the women's 5,000-meter.
After clocking the eighth-fastest 200-meter time in the country last weekend, junior Drelan Bramwell will aim to up it once again with a new personal best in the event. Bramwell also ran the third-best time in the 400-meter dash, but will not compete in the event this weekend. His teammate and fellow 200-meter runner Brandon Hasson – who ran the 16th-fastest time so far – will also join him in the 200 meter.
The two will also team up on the men's 4x100 relay with Herb Polk and Ronny Hall, who together ran a 39.84 at the Baldy Castillo Invite. That time ranked sixth in the country so far through week one. Polk, Hasson and Bramwell also ran the sixth-best time in the 4x400 relay with Jeremy Wright. They'll all get a go at besting those times this weekend.
In the throws, senior Tom Anderson didn't hit a personal best last weekend in the shot put, but does hold the 10th-best national mark with a throw of 18.52m (60-9.25). He'll get another go at nearing his personal best of 18.97m this weekend.
Fellow senior thrower Kyle Long also holds two top-15 national marks in the discus and hammer throws after week one. Long hit a new personal best in the hammer throw at the Baldy Invite last weekend, which moved him into third on the ASU all-time list.
Friday's meet begins at 1 p.m. PT with the men's hammer throw followed by the women. The javelin will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the only track event – the 5,000-meter – will begin at 7:30 p.m. PT.
Saturday's field events start at 2:30 p.m. PT with the discus throw, with running events beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the men's 110-meter hurdles.
The meet will be live streamed on Saturday here.
