PHOENIX – The Sun Devil baseball team was defeated by No. 7 Cal State Fullerton, 10-4, on Tuesday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Starting right-hander Ryan Hingst gave the Devils a solid outing, allowing one hit and one run over 3.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts in the outing. Outfielder Andrew Shaps recorded his second consecutive multi-hit game while freshman Lyle Lin remained consistent, logging his ninth multi-hit game of the season. The Devils finished with an impressive 11 hits in the contest against a quality opponent but were just unable to find the big knock when they needed it.

The Sun Devils wasted no time jumping on Titans starter John Gavin, as they scored two runs in the first inning. Infielder Jackson Willeford and Shaps both singled and Lyle Lin and Carter Aldrete delivered with RBI-singles to put the Devils up 2-0 at the end of the frame. Both teams kept the other off the board through the third frame. Hingst was efficient in the third inning, using just six pitches to take care of the Titans in order.

Right-hander Eder Erives came in to pitch for Hingst with one out in the fourth and shut down the Titans with a strikeout. The reliever did not allow an earned run over 1.1 innings.

Fullerton struck for the first time in the fourth frame, using an RBI-groundout to outfielder Scott Hurst to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Devils stuck again in the fourth inning, adding two more to the score. Catcher Sam Ferri hit a two-out single followed by a Jackson Willeford walk, putting two runners on base. Outfielder Myles Denson singled came through with a single, scoring Ferri from second. Outfielder Andrew Shaps drilled a RBI double to left-center field to plate Willeford and extend the ASU lead to 4-1.

The Titans responded hit-for-hit in the fifth frame. The team added two runs, all scored with two outs, to tighten the score 4-3. Left-hander Connor Higgins entered for Erives with two outs in the fifth and induced a pop-up to end the inning.

The Sun Devils threatened to add to their lead after designated hitter Tyler Williams smoked a single up the middle and reached third on a balk and ground-out. However the Devils were unable to capitalize and the lead remained at one run.

The Titans tied the score in the six as outfielder Chad Prescott singled in a run to even things up at 4-4.

Left-hander Chaz Montoya and right-hander James Ryan teamed up to tackle the Titans and pitch out of a bases-loaded jam. Montoya delivered a clutch strikeout and Ryan induced a ground-out that was turned to a double-play.

ASU attempted to regain the lead after infielder Jeremy McCuin singled, but a strikeout ended the home half of the sixth.

Fullerton took their first lead of the game in the seven, scoring twice to make it 6-4. The Devils brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to cash in the opportunity. Cal State Fullerton took advantage and pushed forward in the ninth inning, tacking on four runs to stake a six-run lead in the final frame.

Notes:
The Sun Devils scored multiple runs in the first inning for the first time this season…The ASU offense tagged Titans starter John Gavin for four runs in four innings of work…Previously, Gavin had allowed just 1 run total in his 13.1 innings pitched this season…Lyle Lin reached base for the 11th consecutive game and is the only Sun Devil to reach base in every game this season…with two more hits on the night, Lin now has multiple hits in nine of the 12 games the Sun Devils have played this season…Andrew Shaps is now 4-for-10 (.400) with a home run, double and two-RBI's in his last two games.

Up Next: The Devils host the second game of the mid-week series against Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, March 8th at 6:30 p.m. The Sun Devils will remain at home for a three-game set against Long Beach State starting on Friday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m. The Saturday and Sunday contests in that series will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks with all other games being shown online via the Pac-12 Digital Stream.
