Sun Devil Baseball's Canning Named Pac-12 Player of the WeekSun Devil Baseball's Canning Named Pac-12 Player of the Week
TEMPE – Sun Devil Baseball sophomore outfielder Gage Canning was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for his role in four victories last week, the conference announced on Monday.

Canning, out of Ramona, Calif., did it all for the Sun Devils as he led the team with five runs scored while posting a team-best five RBIs as ASU earned a midweek victory over UNLV before picking up the team's first Pac-12 series victory and sweep this season over Washington State.

Canning bat .333 on the week on 6-of-18 hitting with two multi-hit games. His four-RBI outing against Washington State in the series opener was a career best and the first game this season where a Sun Devil had at least four RBIs in a contest.

In that effort, Canning went 2-for-4 and knocked a three-run home run in the second inning – his second of the year – to help the Devils kick off the series with a 6-5 victory in a game in which he scored twice.

The sophomore opened the week with a hit, a run and a sac fly in the team's 5-3 victory over UNLV and added another hit and run in the team's 10-7 victory on Friday to take the series against WSU.

Canning again played a pivotal role in the series-sweeping victory on Saturday, accounting for the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth in a game in which he went 2-for-5.

Canning reached on a two-out single with the game tied in the ninth and eventually was plated by Hunter Bishop's walk-off single to win the game.

The outfielder has been ASU's hottest player in recent weeks, currently riding a team-leading eight-game hitting streak in which he has batted .441 on 15-of-34 hitting – five more than any other Sun Devil - with a team-best .676 slugging percentage with two home runs and two doubles.

Canning is a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen bases in that time, leads the team with eight runs scored and also paces the way with seven RBIs in those eight games while going errorless in the field with several highlight-reel grabs in right.

This is the first Pac-12 weekly honor for Canning in his career and the 107th all-time weekly honor for the Devils. It is the first weekly award for a Sun Devil player (pitcher or position) this season.

The Sun Devils will take a break from Pac-12 action this week, traveling to Las Vegas for a midweek tilt against UNLV on Tuesday before hosting CSU Bakersfield in Phoenix for a three-game set beginning on Friday evening.
