TEMPE, Ariz. – Behind Monica Vaughn's career-low 64 in round one, the No. 5 Arizona State women's golf team finished in a tie for the team lead (-10) with No. 15 Baylor following the first 18 holes of the 45th annual PING/ASU Invitational.
Vaughn's first round score also set a new program record for low individual round vs. par (-8), topping the previous record most recently set by Louise Stahle (64/-7) in 2005. She shot the first eagle of the day on hole 14, birdieing eight other holes.
Roberta Liti (T3) also shot her second lowest career round, lowest in tournament play (69), after her career low in a dual match vs. Denver earlier this spring.
"It was incredibly exciting to watch Monica [Vaughn] go so low today," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "64 is an incredible accomplishment and I am so happy for her. Roberta [Liti] also had a really good day with 3-under par and everyone else played solid. We just need to make a few course management adjustments and have a few more putts drop tomorrow. I love how this team competes and I look forward to tomorrow."
Freshman Olivia Mehaffey shot an even-72 (T18th), tying with teammate Madison Kerley, who is playing as an individual.
Linnea Strom (73) and Sophia Zeeb (75) rounded out the Sun Devils' five-member team.
Tournament play on Saturday starts once again at 8 a.m. with ASU teeing off between 9:30 am and 10:06 am. Follow live scoring all weekend HERE.
