SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – In a battle that came down to the very last stroke, senior Monica Vaughn highlighted the final day of stroke play at the 2017 NCAA Division I National Championships as the individual medalist and NCAA champion.
Vaughn becomes the sixth all-time Sun Devil to earn an individual championship, ASU now with a new record to their credit, not only for most team national titles but also most individual national titles. Azahara Munoz was the last Sun Devil to win an individual NCAA title (2008).
"I can't even describe how I'm feeling right now," said Vaughn. "Being a senior and to finish like this is an amazing feeling. But to be a Sun Devil, too, is one of the greatest things. Earlier in the day, I was having a rough time and I was 1-or 2-over at that point, I think, and I just thought 'what are you grateful for'. It just instantly turned me around and I played a lot better after that."
On a streak to end her senior year, Vaughn earns the title after winning the NCAA Lubbock Regional individual title two weeks ago as ASU also won the team title.
As a team, the Sun Devils shot the second-best round of the day (+1/289) to move from a tie for ninth all the way to the third seed, earning a spot in Tuesday's match play quarterfinals. All five Sun Devils shot their best rounds of the tournament thus far.
As the third seed, they will face No. 6 seed Florida at 7 am CT on Tuesday, starting from hole 10.
"The goal was to stay present, stay relaxed, and we tried to just enjoy ourselves out there," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "We worked hard at not talking about this being [Monica's] last tournament – Arizona State and me are really going to miss this young lady. We finally figured out that pars were really good on this golf course and I think we did a much better job with that today, and our play reflected that."
The other match play pairings are as follows: No. 2 seed Stanford vs. No. 7 seed Baylor, No. 1 seed Northwestern vs No. 8 seed Kent State, and No. 4 seed Ohio State vs No. 5 seed USC.
The winner of Arizona State's match will face the winner of Stanford/Baylor in the semifinals at 1:30 pm CT on Tuesday, with the winner of that match advancing to Wednesday's national championship match.
The quarterfinals will air on Golf Channel from 10 am-12:30 pm CT with the semifinals from 3-7 pm CT.
