TEMPE, Ariz. – Before she ever steps onto the diving board for an official competition as a Sun Devil, Arizona State freshman Ashley McCool has had plenty of national and international experience as part of the Canadian Junior National Team.
Over the next several days, she will participate in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard at the World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan. The games span from Aug. 19-30 and feature 22 different sports as well as an opening and closing ceremonies and athlete's village, similar to the Olympics.
McCool is the youngest competitor in both events and she and her fellow Canadian teammates will compete against athletes from 17 other countries including North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Ukraine, Mexico, Russia, USA, Brazil, Australia, Germany, Philippines, Romania, Italy, Lithuania, Ireland, Sweden, Taiwan. 107 total athletes will compete in diving events.
According to head diving coach Mark Bradshaw, as the No. 2 ranked female diver out of Canada, McCool is one of the "most versatile divers" on this year's team that moves from five to nine student-athletes on the combined men's and women's teams.
Earlier this year, she placed second on the 1-meter and 3-meter and seventh on platform at Canadian Nationals, following the performance with a medal sweep at the Canada Summer Games, earning a gold in synchronized diving, a silver on 3-meter, and bronze on 1-meter. At 2016 Junior Nationals, she broke a Canadian record, placing second in the 3-meter synchronized dive.
The World University Games are known as "Universiade", coming from the words "University" and "Olympiade". The International University Sports Federation (FISU) represents international multi-sport events for university athletes.
