FORT WORTH, Texas – The 67th-ranked Sun Devil senior Kelley Anderson picked up a singles win in the final day of the Big Five Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, Sunday.
Anderson's win was the only ASU victory of the day, and came over Caroline Daxhelet of Virginia Tech. Daxhelet took down Savannah Slaysman earlier in the weekend, but Anderson bested the Hokie senior Sunday in three sets.
The Roanoke, Texas, native, Anderson, dominated the first set, 6-1, then nearly grabbed the two-set sweep, but Daxhelet took the second set, 6-7. Anderson cruised to the win in the third set, 10-3.
"We struggled a bit today in most of our matches, but, overall, I thought the tournament was great for the whole team," head coach Sheila McInerney said. "It was nice to be exposed to seven excellent teams outside of our conference."
ASU had two doubles teams in the championship section, but the Devils' hot streak came to end as both Anderson and Nicole Fossa Huergo, and Slaysman and Tereza Kolarova lost their first matches of the fall.
"Overall, our doubles play was very strong as we went 8-2 on the weekend," McInerney said. "Singles play was a mixed bag as we finished 11-12, but I was happy with how competitive our matches were, win or lose."
The weekend in Texas pitted ASU against some of the best teams in the NCAA, and the Sun Devil tandem of Anderson and Fossa Huergo picked up an early signature win when they defeated the No. 8 doubles pairing in the NCAA.
"It really gives us a feel for the depth of college tennis throughout the country," McInerney said. "For our three freshmen, I think that will be extremely beneficial as we move forward. We realize how many good players there are and you have to be playing at a high level to come away with a win.
"We are thankful to TCU for hosting such a high-caliber event this early in the season," McInerney said. "We will give the team a couple of days off to recover and get back to work on Wednesday."
ASU's next event will be the All-American Championships in Los Angeles next weekend.
