ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The third and final day of play at the Michigan Invitational included more of the same from Sun Devil freshman Lauryn John-Baptiste, as she recorded another win over a ranked opponent Monday in Ann Arbor.

The Sun Devils lined up opposite the No. 7 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in singles play, and came away with two individual wins, earned by John-Baptiste and fellow freshman Sasa Klanecek.

Despite dropping the other three singles matches to the women of Georgia Tech, ASU pushed the Yellow Jackets to three sets in the remaining matches, and Ilze Hattingh nearly knocked off No. 89 Ida Jarlskog, 6-3, 2-6, 5-7.

"I thought we ended the tournament playing well, particularly in the singles," coach Sheila McInerney said. "We had some tough three-set losses, but all in all, the team played and competed well today."

John-Baptiste's win over No. 79 Johnnise Renaud was a scrappy two-set sweep that the ASU frosh won 7-6, 6-4. It was Renaud's second loss of the weekend, and John-Baptiste's Invitational-leading third win in three days, and second consecutive over a ranked opponent.

Klanecek's first win of 2018 came against Nadia Gizdova, 6-4, 6-3. Although the freshmen scored ASU's two singles wins on the day, when paired up for doubles matches, John-Baptiste/Klanecek found it too much to deal with Jones/Najarian of Michigan, falling 6-0 to the Wolverine duo.

The Sun Devils' highest-ranked doubles duo took care of business against Michigan's Fahey/Patiuk. No. 28 Savannah Slaysman/Tereza Kolarova did not drop a game on their way to an impressive 6-0 win.

"Lauryn picked up another very good win, and Sasa played much better today," McInerney said. "Savannah and Tereza played extremely well in doubles and are gaining a lot of confidence. The other two teams just got off to slow starts and couldn't catch up."

With the Michigan Invitational wrapped up, Arizona State turns its attention to Northern Arizona, who it will host at the Whiteman Tennis Center next Saturday at noon MST for its first dual match of the season.

"This tournament was great preparation for the season," McInerney said. "We got to compete against three top-10 teams early on, which can only help us get ready for next weekend's first dual match."
