INTRODUCTION & MISSION STATEMENT
1.1. INTRODUCTION
The Sun Devil Athletics (SDA) Policies and Procedures Manual provides information for current and prospective ASU student-athletes and their families, ASU faculty and staff, and the interested public. This manual includes policies that affect the student-athlete experience at Arizona State University.
In the event of an inconsistency or conflict, applicable law and Board of Regents' policies supersede university policies and university policies supersede college, department, or lower unit bylaws, policies, or guidelines. The university reserves the right to add, amend, or revoke any of the contained rules, policies, regulations, and instructions or incorporate additional ones, with or without notice, as circumstances or the good of the university community may require.
1.2. MISSION STATEMENT
The mission statement of Sun Devil Athletics (SDA) is "To maximize human potential in the pursuit of comprehensive excellence".
The mission of Sun Devil Athletics is to provide opportunities for student-athletes to achieve at the highest levels of both academic and athletic excellence, thereby providing them with opportunities for personal growth, offering a unifying force to the campus community, and creating a source of pride among and support from the external constituencies of the University.
SDA is fully committed to the principles of student-athlete welfare, institutional control, gender and ethnic diversity, and sportsmanship. This commitment includes creating an environment where student-athletes contribute to a winning tradition while enhancing the campus and local community and competing in a program having integrity and high ethical standards. SDA is committed to a leadership role within the University, community, the PAC-12 Conference, and the nation.
1.3. PHILOSOPHY
The mission of Arizona State University is to provide outstanding programs in instruction, research, and creative activity, to promote economic development, and to provide service appropriate for the nation, the state of Arizona, and the state's major metropolitan area.
Arizona State University considers intercollegiate athletics to be an integral part of the university. Consequently, the Sun Devil Athletics program is expected to reflect the same standards of excellence and integrity that characterize the instructional, research, and public service activities of the university as a whole. Within this context, the mission of Sun Devil Athletics (SDA) is to provide opportunities for student-athletes to achieve at the highest levels of academic and athletic excellence, thereby providing them with opportunities for personal growth, offering a unifying force to the campus community, and creating a source of pride among and support from external constituencies of the university.
Arizona State University is committed to the institutional control of its intercollegiate athletics program. The president of Arizona State University is responsible for, and has final authority in all matters (including personnel) related to, the operation of the intercollegiate athletics program.
Arizona State University regards the student-athlete primarily as a student, with academic qualifications, individual rights, personal interests, and aspirations similar to those of all students. The graduation rates of recruited student-athletes as a group, or of any significant subgroup thereof, are expected to be at least equal to those achieved by the student body at large. Moreover, student-athletes are encouraged to integrate fully into the broader community of students, and to utilize the full range of services and opportunities provided by the university for the benefit of all students.
Arizona State University is committed to the principles of amateurism, gender and ethnic diversity, nondiscrimination, ethical conduct, good sportsmanship, and fair play in all aspects of its Sun Devil Athletics program. Arizona State University is committed to the self-regulation of all aspects of the Sun Devil Athletics program according to internal rules that are at least as stringent as those imposed by official regulatory bodies. These internal controls are intended to achieve full compliance with external regulations and to ensure that the intercollegiate athletics program is operated in a manner consistent with the university's mission and goals.
Arizona State University values and encourages the support of the intercollegiate athletics program by those within and outside of the university. All such assistance is expected to conform to the internal and external regulations that govern such activities.
