Dick Arbuckle begins his ninth year on Bruce Snyder's ASU staff as coach of the tight ends and special teams. Arbuckle joined Snyder's California staff in 1990 as the wide receivers and special teams coach and has remained with his former college teammate ever since.
At ASU he has tutored tight ends Bob Brasher (all-Pac-10), Brian Ryder, Matt Nelson (academic all-Pac-10), Steve Bush (all-Pac-10, Cincinnati Bengals), Kendrick Bates (honorable mention all-Pac-10), Matt Cercone (Barcelona), Jason Moore, Zack Romero (academic all-Pac-10). Brian Jennings (San Francisco 49ers), Devin Kendall (academic All-American and all-Pac-10) and Todd Heap (first team all-Pac-10 and All-America candidate). Arbuckle's kickers have earned all-Pac-10 status: Marcus Williams (first-team); Robert Nycz (second team, hnorable mention twice); and Jon Baker (second-team).
Included on his resumé are 19 years of experience as a head coach on both the high school and college levels and 15 years as an assistant coach in the Pacific-10 Conference.
Prior to California, Arbuckle spent three seasons at Boise State where he served as both offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. While there, he helped the Broncos to three consecutive winning records, including a Division I-AA playoff berth in 1988 on the heels of an 8-4 record. In 1987 the offense led the nation, averaging over 450 yards per game. Previous to Boise State, he spent two years at Oregon State University where he served as recruiting coordinator and also assisted with the offensive line.
Arbuckle worked as head coach at two different colleges in Oregon during the early 1980s, helping Oregon Institute of Technology to a pair of league titles with an 8-3 record in 1981 and an 8-2 mark in '82 and was Coach of the Year both seasons. He then moved to Western Oregon State College for two years.
The early part of his coaching career was spent on the prep level in Oregon. After beginning his coaching career as an assistant at North Eugene High School from 1961-63, he was named head coach at Oregon City High School where he spent the 1963 and '64 seasons, posting a 14-4 cumulative record. He then moved to Sheldon High School in Eugene where he spent 13 seasons from 1966 through 1980. During that span, Arbuckle moved to the college ranks for a three-year period from 1974-76 when he served as outside linebacker coach and special teams coordinator for the University of Oregon.
Arbuckle had a reputation for developing fine talent while a prep coach at Sheldon High. Among his players who advanced to NFL careers were quarterback Chris Miller, tight end Todd Christiansen, linebacker Mike Walter and defensive back Jon Jaqua. He posted a 30-9 four year record with three state playoff appearances and a 12-1 record in 1980 at Sheldon.
Arbuckle earned two letters at Oregon, playing safety and quarterback. He started at safety while teaming with Bruce Snyder on the Ducks 1960 team which earned a Liberty Bowl berth. He lettered in football, basketball and baseball while at El Monte High School in southern California and earned all-CIF honors as a senior quarterback.
Arbuckle, 61 (5/15/39), born in Los Angeles, graduated from Oregon in 1961 with a degree in physical education. He received a master's degree from Oregon in physical education in 1966.
He and his wife, Sherry, have three children, Vicki, Becki and Joe and five grandchildren.
