TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 16 Arizona State Women's Swimming & Diving team came up short versus the ninth-ranked California Golden Bears this afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, falling 166-131. The Sun Devils won seven of the 16 events, with Trisha Tumlinson coming up with two wins and a school record in the diving pool.

Tumlinson broke her own ASU 1-meter springboard record, scoring a 296.70 to better the 291.95 she registered at the Texas Invitational. She defeated her nearest opponent by over 70 points in this event. In the 3-meter, Tumlinson recorded a 309.68, a personal best. Sun Devil Jessica Stenson notched a 276.23 on the 3-meter to finish second.

In the swimming pool, the Sun Devils landed a 1-2 punch in the 1000 free, with Kathryn Hennessy (10:06.94) and Petra Banovic (10:08.80) coming in first and second. Claire Hedenskog touched the wall first in the 50 free (23.49), notching her fifth first-place finish in the 50 free this season, while Sandra Steffensen continues to impress in her first month at ASU, as she won the 500 free (4:55.97).

Ágnes Kovács turned in a strong showing in the 200 breast (2:12.24) and also raced well in the 200 IM (2:03.21), finishing second behind Cal's Natalie Coughlin. Coughlin holds the world record in the 100m IM, which she set in November.

The Sun Devils' 400 free relay team of Banovic, Steffensen, Florencia Szigeti and Hedenskog grabbed a first-place finish with a 3:29.24 in the final race of the day.

The women will be in action again tomorrow, January 25, as they play host to the Stanford Cardinal at 12 p.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The men's meet with Stanford will follow at 2 p.m.
