Sun Devils Conclude First Day at NCAA T&F Championships

    June 6, 2012

    RESULTS

DES MOINES, Iowa – Anna Jelmini took second place in the women’s discus and the Arizona State University track and field team finished up the first day of competition at the 2012 NCAA Championships on Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Jelmini posted a best throw of 58.79m (192-10) on her first throw of the competition and it looked like that would be enough.  But San Diego State’s Whitney Ashley launched her fifth throw 59.99m (196-10) – a career best by over three meters – to surpass Jelmini and hold on for the win.

Jelmini earned eight points towards the Sun Devils’ team cause with the finish, which was the second runner-up placement in a row for the sophomore after finishing in second at last year's NCAA Championships as well.  With the eight points, Jelmini will earn USTFCCCA first-team All-America accolades.

In other events on Wednesday, the ASU women’s 4x100-meter relay of Asiah Gooden, Keia Pinnick, Alycia Herring and Kayla Sanchez took 16th-place overall in the semifinals in 44.84 to earn second-team All-America accolades.  The team did not, however, advance to Saturday’s final.

In the final event of the day, senior Chris Benard was also 16th overall in the men’s long jump competition with a best jump of 7.39m (24-3) to earn second team All-America honors himself.

The Sun Devils will resume action tomorrow at Drake Stadium with Keia Pinnick leading the day off in the heptathlon, set to begin at 1 p.m. CST.  For a complete recap of the day’s action, check back at www.TheSunDevils.com at the conclusion of tomorrow’s events.
