Seventh Inning Dooms Baseball In 9-4 Loss To Washington

    April 24, 2010

    Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 1 Arizona State University baseball team lost to Washington 9-4 on Saturday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Sun Devils fall to 32-5 overall, 10-4 in the Pac-10, with the loss.

The Huskies scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. ASU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back home runs by Kole Calhoun and Riccio Torrez, and then a sacrifice fly by Torrez in the fifth put the Sun Devils ahead 4-3.

However, Washington answered back with three runs in the seventh off Mitchell Lambson, capped off by a two-run homer by Chase Anselment. The Huskies would then add three more runs in the ninth against Jordan Swagerty.

Lambson took the loss to fall to 3-2 on the season. Merrill Kelly started and went six innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned), but he took a no decision.

Calhoun, Torrez and Zack MacPhee all had two hits each in the game. Torrez hit his sixth home run, Calhoun had his fifth of the season and MacPhee collected his 11th triple of the year.

The Sun Devils wrap up their three-game series with Washington on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
