#1 Baseball Defeated 10-5 By Oregon State

    May 3, 2009

    Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 1 Arizona State University baseball lost 10-5 to Oregon State on Sunday at Goss Stadium. The Sun Devils fall to 33-11 overall, 16-5 in the Pac-10, on the season with the loss.

ASU struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the second when Riccio Torrez scored on an error and Kole Calhoun came home when Raoul Torrez grounded into a double play. The Devils added two more in the third on RBI doubles by Riccio Torrez and Calhoun, but the Beavers got a run off ASU starter Jordan Swagerty in the bottom half of that inning.

Carlos Ramirez drove in a run with a single in the fourth to put the Sun Devils in front 5-1, but Oregon State chipped away with a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Beavers then tied the game with two unearned runs in the seventh, and then they scored five in the eighth off the ASU bullpen to win the game and series.

Matt Newman took the loss out of the bullpen, allowing four runs (three earned) to drop to 1-1 on the season. Swagerty went six innings and gave up five hits and three earned runs, but he took a no decision.

Riccio Torrez, Calhoun and Ramirez all had two hits apiece to lead the ASU offense.

The Sun Devils will now return home for eight straight games, beginning with a two-game series against San Diego on Tuesday and Wednesday at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
