    Official release

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State student-athlete Deven Marrero has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Team, it was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Marrero, a shortstop from Davie, Fla., has a 3.56 GPA and is majoring in criminal justice. He was a 2011 Second Team Academic All-Pac-10 and Second Team Academic All-District VIII recipient. The 2011 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-Pac-10 honoree, he has earned all-conference accolades in each of his two seasons at ASU. He set an ASU freshman record with his team-leading .397 batting average in 2010 en route to earning NCBWA First Team Freshman All-American and Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors.

First-Team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later in May.

Thirteen baseball student-athletes have earned Academic All-American honors dating back to 1964, with the most recent being Andy Workman in 2011, Mike Leake in 2009 and Preston Paramore in 2008.
