Coach Esmay's Success From The Field To The MLB Draft
ASU Right-Handed Pitcher Williams Reflects on 2012 Summer and Team USA Experience

DURHAM, N.C. - Arizona State University baseball head coach Tim Esmay has been named an assistant coach for USA Baseball's 2013 Collegiate National Team, it was announced Dec. 18.

"For me, there is no greater honor than having the opportunity to represent the Red, White and Blue," Esmay said. "I have been fortunate to coach a number of Team USA members at ASU over the past three years, so I am familiar with the skill level, competitive spirit and overall baseball IQ required for this global stage. I can't wait for the chance to coach an entire team made up of young men with those characteristics."

Esmay, who will serve as the hitting coach in addition to coaching third base, has a 131-48 record, including 55-29 in conference, through three seasons at the helm of the Sun Devil baseball team. He has one College World Series appearance, one conference title and two NCAA tournament trips, and was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2010.

Since being named ASU's head coach in 2010, Esmay has helped guide four Sun Devils to the USA Collegiate National Collegiate Team, including Trevor Williams in 2012, Deven Marrero and Brady Rodgers in 2011, and Drew Maggi in 2010. He helped five others make the team as an assistant coach with the Devils, including Matt Newman and Mike Leake in 2009, Petey Paramore and Brett Wallace in 2007, and Jim Austin in 1990.

He has also mentored eight All-Americans and 25 all-conference honorees, and 31 Sun Devils have been taken in the MLB Draft in his ASU tenure, which is the most of any Div. I school in that time span. Esmay has guided ASU to the highest regular-season winning percentage in the Pac-12 since 2010, is the second-fastest coach in ASU history to reach 100 wins and recently led the program to its 50th consecutive 30-win season. For his career, he is 344-283-1 in 11 seasons, including eight at the University of Utah.

Esmay, along with Mike Bianco and Ed Servais, who are head coaches for Ole Miss and Creighton, respectively, will join 2013 collegiate team manager and current TCU skipper Jim Schlossnagle's four-man staff.

"I have always enjoyed playing Coach Esmay's teams at both Utah and Arizona State," Schlossnagle said. "He brings great energy and enthusiasm to the field each day and his teams always reflect those characteristics. I know he will bring the same attitude and energy to our USA Staff and team offense each and every day as we compete against the best the world has to offer."

Biano will serve as the pitching coach in 2013 and Servais will coach team defense and first base. TCU's Danny Wheat will serve as the team's certified athletic trainer and Brandie Davidson will serve as the team press officer.
