Top 12 ASU Baseball Moments of 2008: #8- Mike Leake Helps Team USA To Gold Medals

    Dec. 29, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - As we count down the final days of 2008, TheSunDevils.com and Arizona State Baseball countdown the Top 12 Sun Devil Baseball moments of 2008.

#8- Mike Leake Helps Team USA To Gold Medals

After turning in another impressive season in maroon in gold in 2008, Mike Leake donned the Red, White and Blue of Team USA for the summer. Leake and the Team USA Collegiate National Team flexed their muscles in the international game, finishing the summer 24-0 and winning gold medals at both the Haarlem Baseball Week and FISU tournaments.

Leake showed his versatility, playing two-ways for the USA. On the mound, the 2008 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year was 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA in eight appearances. He threw 28.0 innings, striking out 24 batters. He was part of the best pitching staff in USA Baseball history, as the staff's ERA of 0.88 was the lowest mark in National Team history. At the plate, Leake collected 13 hits in 55 at-bats, driving in eight and homering once.

Leake is part of a long tradition of Sun Devils playing for Team USA. He became the 13th player and 14th overall Sun Devil selection to play for the USA. He joined 2008 ASU teammates Brett Wallace and Petey Paramore, who played for Team USA in 2007.
