SECOND HALF TIPS
The Sun Devil men's hoops team (17-5; 6-3) plays host to a pair of teams coming off home sweeps when California visits Thursday at 7:30 p.m. MT (Feb. 7) followed by a 5 p.m. MT tilt vs. Stanford Saturday (Feb. 9). The Cal game will be on Pac-12 Network and the Stanford game will on ESPNU, with both being available on 620 AM. ASU has six Pac-12 wins at the halfway point for just the sixth time since joining the Pac-10 in 1978-79 (35 seasons). It was 6-3 in 1994-95, 1993-94 and 1992-93 and was 8-1 in 1980-81 and 1979-80. ASU has won three of past four, with wins over USC, UCLA and WSU and incredbily shot 64 percent in a 96-92 loss in Seattle on Saturday in which Jahii Carson posted 32 points, the most by a Sun Devil freshmen in a road game. ASU is averaging 82.8 points in its past four games. ASU has cleaned up early turnover issues (15.5 first six games but 11.2 in past 16) and has outshot the opponent in 10 of the past 12 games.

GILLING AND ABLE
Sophomore Jonathan Gilling has 154 rebounds (7.0 per game) after posting 54 all of last season. He has made 28 three-pointers in the past 11 games. He posted a career high 22 at Washington on Feb. 2 (including a career-best six three-ponters). Gilling also had 18 points at Texas Tech on Dec. 22 and 14 at Oregon State on Jan. 10 and vs. Coppin State on Dec. 29. He has three double-doubles on the year with 13/11/6 vs. USC on Jan. 24, 12/10 against Colorado on Jan. 6 and 13/15 vs. Florida A&M on Nov. 18. He is averaging 11.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and five assists in the past four games.
Here are some notes to fill a blog on what freshman Jahii Carson is up to these days...averaging 21.7 points, 5.0 assists (only 2.5 TOs) and 3.4 boards in past seven tilts...in the past six games in the second half alone he is averaging 15.0 points and shooting 33-of-58 (.569) from the floor and 6-of-11 (.545) from the three-point stripe...in the four Pac-12 road games Jahii is averaging 24.3 points, 36.8 minutes, and is shooting .548 (40-of-73) from the field with 15 assists and just five turnovers...notched his 11th 20-point game at Washington. The only Sun Devil freshmen with more are James Harden (16 in 2007-08) and Ike Diogu(12 in 2002-03)...set the school freshman mark for assists with 116, breaking the 28-year old mark of 114 set by Bobby Thompson in 1983-84...in the seven games away from home (ASU is 4-3) Jahii is averaging 23.4 points, 4.6 assists, 36.9 minutes and is shooting 53.9 percent from the field (62-of-115)...averaging a Pac-12 best 36.4 minutes per game, the best mark by a freshman in Sun Devil history (dude with the Beard lighting up the NBA averaged 34.1 in 2007-08) and most by a Pac-12 frosh since O.J. Mayo averaged 36.9 in 2007-08.

Carrick Felix (B.S., Communications 2012) has posted a double-double in three of the past four games (16/10 vs. USC, 23/11 vs. UCLA, 11/10 at Washington State). The most impressive stat might be he has played 145 minutes in those four games (three of them fast paced) and committed just three turnovers. He did not commit a turnover in the 44-minute overtime 98-93 track meet vs. USC on Jan. 24 or in the road win at WSU on Jan. 31. He earned his third Pac-12 Player of the Week award following the UCLA/USC weekend and his five double-doubles in nine Pac-12 games is tied for league lead...averaging 15.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in past 17 games and has scored in double digits 20-of-22 games on the year..10 20-point games and five this year (career high 24 vs. Arkansas also 23 vs. UCLA)...after not having a double-double in the first 65 career games he posted them in back-to-back games with 11 points and 11 boards vs. Hartford (Dec. 5) and 21 points/12 boards vs. Sacramento St. (Dec. 1) and now has eight in past 15 games...earned Pac-12 Player of the Week after home sweep of Utah (Jan. 2) and Colorado (Jan. 6), his second such honor of the year...back-to-back double-doubles vs. USC (16/10) and UCLA (23/11) earned him his third triple double.

Evan Gordon is averaging 14.9 points and 38.8 minutes in the past six games and is 33-of-69 (.478) from the field in that time. With 17 points at Oregon on Jan. 14 Evan Gordon (brother of NBA guard Eric) reached the 1,000-point mark in his college career. He averaged 14.4 points per game in 2010-11 (460 points) and 12.0 points in his freshman year of 2009-10 (372 points) and has 240 points this year (10.9 per game). He is averaging 12.6 points per game in 85 career games. After starting the year 7-of-34 (.206) from the three-point stripe in first six games he has made 36-of-92 (.391) in past 16. His 29-point effort vs. Sacramento State on Dec. 1 is a career high including his two years at Liberty as he has 12 20-point games. He made 112 three-pointers in his two-year career at Liberty and led Liberty in scoring (14.4 ppg., eighth in Big South) in his sophomore year (2010-11) before transferring to ASU. THIS WAS IMPRESSIVE
ASU outrebounded UCLA 53-33 on Jan. 26, and the +20 margin is the biggest rebounding margin in a conference game for ASU under Coach Sendek (117 Pac-12 games). Its 98 points vs. USC was the third-most in the Coach Sendek era at ASU.
ASU has 155 blocks in 20 games (7.04 per game) which enters this week as fourth in the nation and opponents have taken 1,357 shots so that means every 8.75 field goal attempt gets blocked by a Sun Devil...junior Jordan Bachynski has 91 blocks (4.3 PG) and last year's Pac-12 leader, Eric Moreland of Oregon State, fihished with 69/1.9 bpg...in the first 41 games of his career Jordan Bachynski shot 42-of-88 (.478) from field. In the past 35 games he is 134-212 (.632)...ASU has 155 blocks on the year, the most by a Sun Devil squad since the 1996-97 team had school record 172.

CLOSE GAME STATS
ASU is now 8-4 in overtime under Coach Sendek after its 55-54 win over Utah on Jan. 2 and its 98-93 track meet win vs. USC on Jan. 24. Many say that a two-possession game (six points) is a close game, and if you go by that ASU is 31-24 (.564) in those contests in the past six seasons.
ASU had 14 three-pointers at Texas Tech on Dec. 22, just the 12th time in school history it had hit 14 and it tied for the second-most in a road game. ASU hit 16 at Brigham Young on Dec. 1, 1992, and also had 14 at Oregon on Jan. 30, 1993.
Jahii Carson, with 20 points at Oregon State (Jan. 10) and at Oregon (Jan. 13), became the first Sun Devil freshman to get back-to-back 20-point games on a Pac-12 road trip since Steve Beck in the Bay Area on March 1-3, 1984. Beck had four 20-point games in Pac-12 road games, as did James Harden (2007-08), Ike Diogu(2002-03) and Jamal Faulkner (1990-91), but none of that trio did it on the same Pac-12 road weekend and now his streak is at four 20-point games on the road with 25 at Washington State and 32 at Washington.

In the first six seasons (197 games) of Coach Sendek's ASU tenure, ASU had nine blocks in a game four times. It has had at least nine blocks nine times this season. An overlooked block statistic for Jordan is keeping it in play. Of his 91 blocks, 56 have resulted in direct possessions for ASU. He has now 152 career blocks. The Sun Devil career record is 191 (Mario Bennett from 1991-95).
