The 2005 NCAA football statistics are final and Arizona State University redshirt freshman quarterback Rudy Carpenter ended the campaign as the NCAA leader in passing efficiency at a rating of 175.0. Brian Brohm of Louisville was second (166.7) while Vince Young of Texas was third (163.9).

Carpenter, from Westlake, Calif., took over for the injured Sam Keller and started the final five games of the season, leading the Sun Devils to a 4-1 record. Carpenter completed 156 of 228 passes for 2,273 yards, 17 touchdowns and just two interceptions on the year. He completed 68.4-percent of his passes and averaged 252.6 passing yards per game. Carpenter completed 23 of 35 passes for 467 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in ASU's 45-40 Insight Bowl victory over Rutgers despite playing with a separated left shoulder which he suffered in the first quarter. Carpenter won Insight Bowl game Most Valuable Offensive Player accolades for that performance.
