TEMPE. ARIZ. - The Arizona State University football team will open play in 2012 at home versus Northern Arizona on Thursday, August 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Sun Devil Stadium. The game was selected for Thursday to accommodate the brand new Pac-12 Television Network. It will be part of the new Network's first college football night, the second game of a doubleheader.
The ASU/NAU game on Thursday, August 30 will be the second football game televised by the Pac-12 Network.
The move was made to accommodate the new Pac-12 Conference Television Network. The date also will allow Sun Devil football fans the opportunity to enjoy the Labor Day weekend on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. When ASU has moved Labor Day weekend games to Thursday in the past it has helped to increase the game's attendance, especially student participation.
Three of the last four season openers that ASU hosted on a Thursday prior to the holiday weekend drew over 50,000 fans (53,540 for NAU in 2006, 50,049 for Temple in 2005 and 57,528 for UTEP in 2004).
Additionally, the Sun Devil football team will benefit from the extra days to prepare for the Illinois game the following week on Saturday, September 8.
