ASU's Brandon Magee Named To 2012 Butkus Award Watch List

    July 16, 2012

CHICAGO - Arizona State University football student-athlete Brandon Magee has been named to the 2012 Butkus Award Preseason Collegiate Watch List, the Butkus Foundation announced today.

Magee is one of seven candidates from the Pac-12 for the 28th annual Butkus Award, given annually to the nation's best linebacker. This is the second consecutive year that a Sun Devil has been named to the award's preseason watch list.

Magee, who sat out the entire 2011 season due to an Achilles tear suffered in preseason camp, ranked second on the team in tackles as a junior in 2010. He appeared in all 12 games, including 11 starts, during the 2010 football season en route to a career-high 73 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He recorded a season-high 13 tackles in a 30-29 double-overtime win over Arizona in Tucson, Ariz.

He started the first game of the 2009 season, recording five tackles (four solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, a 10-yard sack and an interception, and appeared in all 12 games. He finished the year with 34 tackles (21 solo), seven tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He played in eight games as a reserve linebacker and on special teams as a freshman in 2008, and collected five tackles (three solo) in his collegiate debut, a season-opening win over NAU on Aug. 30.

A 2008 graduate of Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., Magee is one of several players on this year's roster from Centennial, along with Jarrid Bryant, Michael Eubank and William Sutton.

The watch list contains 51 candidates, honoring the now-retired professional jersey number of Dick Butkus for whom the award is named after. The selection panel is comprised of 51 coaches, evaluators and journalists, coordinated by Pro Football Weekly. Candidates in addition to those appearing on the watch list may be considered for the Award.

Semi-finalists will be named October 22, finalists November 20, and winners will be notified on or before December 4. The Professional Butkus Award winner will be announced in January 2013. Winners will be featured in a television special a week before the Super Bowl.

The Butkus Award is presented by the Butkus Foundation and is a 501c3 non-profit organization. It is part of the National College Football Awards Association, a coalition of the major collegiate awards. More information is available at www.NCFAA.org.
