Sun Devil Football Finds Radio Home In San Diego Where More Than 5,600 Sun Devils Call Home

    July 16, 2012

--Here is a link to the Arizona State alumni San Diego Chapter, which has more than 5,600 Sun Devils in its database.

San Diego is the home of many great Sun Devil connections from the past to the present. Phil and Tim Mickelson are great examples. The 1987 Rose Bowl MVP and current radio analyst Jeff Van Raaphorst came east to Tempe from Grossmont High School, along with ESPN analyst Eric Allen.

So it only makes sense that Sun Devil Football is on the radio in the San Diego area, and KCBQ-AM 1170 AM agrees.

The station will join the Sun Devil Sports Network and broadcast every football game in 2012 on its 50,000 watt (daytime) station, something that more than 5,600 Sun Devil alumni in the greater San Diego area will no doubt be glad to hear.

"KCBQ is excited to partner with Arizona State University Football for the 2012 season," says Dave Armstrong, Vice President and General Manager of KCBQ-AM. "Tempe and San Diego are practically neighbors with a huge ASU alumni base here in Southern California. We expect that ASU will be in the middle of the fight for Pac-12 honors this year."

"ASU and Sun Devil Athletics have always had a deep and broad based relationship with the San Diego community, the people that live there and the businesses that operate there," notes Vice President of Athletics Steve Patterson. "We are excited that Sun Devil football will be available on the Sun Devil Radio Network on KCBQ 1170 AM. Our alumni base there is strong, Sun Devil and Grossmont High School graduate and Jeff Van Raaphorst (1987 Rose Bowl MVP) provides the color commentary and our Sun Devil Club has a strong presence in their community, so it is a great natural fit."

--Arizona State has a strong presence in the San Diego community. Here is a Sun Devil-owned business...

"We're thrilled to expand the Sun Devil IMG Radio Network into what so many call America's Finest City," says Mike Kohler, General Manager of Sun Devil IMG Sports Marketing. "By adding KCBQ as a football affiliate it greatly expands our network reach for our current partners."
