DALLAS - Arizona State University football student-athlete Cameron Marshall has been named a preseason candidate for the 2012 Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday.
This is the second consecutive year Marshall has been selected to the watch list, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Marshall collected 18 rushing touchdowns this past season, which ranked second in the Pac-12 and ninth in the nation, to earn honorable mention All-Pac-12 recognition for the second consecutive year. The total tied him with Woody Green (1972) and Terry Battle (1996) for the most ever in a single season in school history.
His 1,050 rushing yards in 2011 made him the 16th Sun Devil in school history to run for more than 1,000 yards in a season and an integral part of the first trio in school history to collect 1,000 yards rushing, receiving and passing.
Marshall lead the team in total offense and scoring, including a three-touchdown, 141-yard performance in a win vs. No. 23 USC Sept. 24 at Sun Devil Stadium. He also had 22 carries in a 37-30 (OT) upset win over No. 19 Missouri in Tempe on Sept. 9.
He enters his senior season 12th in school history in career rushing yards with 2,131 yards and fourth in career rushing touchdowns with 29. He has five career 100-yard rushing games
The award, in its 23rd year, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
Marshall is a regular at Cesar Chavez High School, where he discusses life skills for success and the importance of getting an education. He has been a four-year coach at Camp for the Stars, a football camp for kids with Downs Syndrome, as well as a counselor at a two-day Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp. He is also a four-time participant in Pat's Run and is involved in other activities around Arizona State's Tempe campus.
