College Football Performance Awards

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State tight end Chris Coyle has been named College Football Performance Awards Football Bowl Subdivision Tight End Performer of the Week for week two for his role in leading the Sun Devils to a 45-14 win over Illinois on Sept. 8 at Sun Devil Stadium.

Coyle turned in one of the best games by a tight end in school history against the Illini, collecting 10 catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns. His 131 receiving yards are the second most by a tight end in ASU annals, trailing only Todd Heap's 170 yards. Both of Coyle's touchdowns came from quarterback Michael Eubank in the first half.

Freshman linebacker Carlos Mendoza, making his first career start in place of the injured Brandon Magee, recorded two interceptions in the first half to earn College Football Performance Awards Honorable Mention recognition. He injured his shoulder just before halftime and missed the remainder of the game.

The purpose of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous distinction in college football. Recipients are selected based exclusively on objective scientific rankings and place emphasis on the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. The CFPA is also the sole group to honor national freshman performer of the year, kickoff returner, punt returner and kickoff specialist.
