Men's Golf Opens Spring Season in Hawai'i

    Jan. 31, 2012

The Arizona State men’s golf team opens its spring season when it travels to the Waikoloa Beach Resort in Waikoloa, Hawai’i, Feb. 1-3 for the 22nd Annual Amer Ari Invitational. The tournament begins at 7:30 a.m (HST) while the last round begins Friday 7:30 a.m. (HST).

The line up for the Sun Devils includes senior Spencer Fletcher, junior Jin Song, and freshmen Matthias Schjoelberg, Austin Quick and David Lowe.

Fletcher is looking to lead the squad after three top-10 finishes last fall including his first career tournament win at the Bill Cullum Invitational in mid-October.

The Sun Devils will see the returning champion of last year’s Amer Ari, Oklahoma State, who shot a 34-under par 830 at the event. Oklahoma State is currently ranked 23rd in the nation going into this year’s tournament.

The Sun Devils will face five of the top-10 ranked teams in the country, according to GolfWeek, including; top-ranked Texas, No. 2 Oregon, No. 4 UCLA, No. 7 Stanford, No. 9 Georgia Tech and No. 10 Washington.

The Sun Devils tied TCU for seventh-place last year at 14-under par at the event; finishing behind sixth-place Texas Tech by a two strokes.

Last year’s seniors Jesper Kennegard and Scott Pinckney finished in the top-10 at last year’s tournament. Kennegard and Pinckney tied for sixth place among all competitors and both shot a team-low four-under par 68.

After losing six upperclassmen from last year’s squad, including Kennegard and Pinckney, this year’s young Sun Devil squad is looking to break out and prove itself in the first spring tournament.

Live scoring of the event will be available on golfstat.com.

The 20 teams that will be competing include; Arizona State, CSU Chico, Colorado
