Men's Golf To Open Season At Gopher Invitational

Tim Mickelson will begin his second season as Arizona State men's golf coach this Sunday, Sep. 9 at the Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn. This will be ASU's first appearance in the tournament and will be joined by 14 other teams from 11 different collegiate conferences.

The Sun Devils will bring golfers Mathias Schjoelberg, Austin Quick, Max Rottluff, Spencer Lawson and Jon Rahm to compete.

Mickelson will look to ride two familiar faces from last year, including Schjoelberg, a sophomore. Last season Schjoelberg played in all 11 events as a freshman, leading the team with a 73.97 stroke average. He also led the team in eagles (four), pars per round (11.00) and fewest bogeys per round (3.42). He notched one top-ten finish, which came in the Bill Cullum Invitational, where he carded a season-low 67 in the second round.

Another sophomore, Quick, will also be looked upon for success this season. Quick posted a 5-under 66 in the ASU/Thunderbird Invitational last season and finished the year with 82 birdies and one eagle.

The Sun Devils collected five top-ten finishes last season but look to improve on that with the help of a young squad.

The other teams competing in the Gopher Invitational are as follows: University of Arkansas, University of California, Charlotte 49ers, University of Iowa, Kent State University, Lamar University, University of Memphis, University of New Mexico, University of North Texas, University of Oklahoma, Penn State University, Southern Methodist University, and St. John's University.

Arkansas took the event championship last year, shooting a combined 16-over 880.

The first two rounds will be held Sunday, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (CT). The final round will begin at the same time on Monday.
