TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 20 Arizona State men's tennis team went down in defeat against the No. 18 Pepperdine Wave, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center. Arizona State falls to 4-4 on the season, while Pepperdine improves to 8-4. In the earlier match of the day, No. 5 TCU upended No. 28 Washington, 4-2.
In doubles action, the Wave started off the match strong winning two of the three doubles points to earn the first point of the afternoon. Pepperdine's No.3 duo of Kevin Borzenski and Richard Johnson came off the court first as they defeated the Sun Devils team of Christopher Biro (Fr., Adelaide, Australia) and Ryan McBride (So., Tempe, Ariz.), 8-3. The Wave wrapped up the doubles point as the No. 1 pair of Chris Stewart (Sr., Adelaide, Australia) and Andy Colombo (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) came up short, 8-6, against the Pepperdine team of Calle Hansen and Pedro Rico. The Sun Devils No. 2 duo of Clinton Letcher (Jr., Melbourne, Australia) and Jonathan Kinsella (So., Astley, England) came out on top of the pair of Scott Doerner and Alexandre Herrera, 8-6, to earn the victory.
ASU was not able to steal that momentum away during singles play as they surrendered three of four singles matches to end the day. The Sun Devils only win came at the No. 4 position when Kinsella overcame Doerner, 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 3 spot, Herrera topped ASU's Colombo, 6-3,6-4, while in the No. 5 position Biro fell to Alexis Rafidson, 6-4, 6-3. Next off the court, playing in the No. 2 spot, the Sun Devils Letcher fell, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in a hard fought match to Rico, which sealed the victory for the Wave.
Because the team match was already decided, the No. 1 singles match between the Sun Devils Stewart and Hansen was not completed, Stewart was up in the third set when the match was called, 3-6, 6-3, 5-4. The No. 6 singles match between McBride and Johnson was also called off before it was completed, in which Johnson had a slight edge in the third set, 3-6, 7-6, 2-1.
In the first dual of the day, the TCU Horned Frogs upended the Washington Huskies, 4-2. The Huskies came out strong, winning the doubles point, but were unable to pull off the win. TCU took four of the five singles matches to earn the victory. With the victory the Horned Frogs improve to an impressive 9-0, while the Huskies fall to 8-5 on the season.
The Arizona State Quadrangle continues tomorrow morning at the Whiteman Tennis Center, as No. 5 TCU and No. 28 Washington face off at 9:30 a.m. followed by the No. 20 Sun Devils taking on the No. 28 Washington Huskies at 1:30 p.m.
