    WRESTLER OF THE MATCH

At the conclusion of each event this season, both in tournament and dual competition, Head Coach Thom Ortiz will select a Wrestler of the Match. Here is this the latest addition to the list for the 2005-06 season:

Oklahoma (dual) - Patrick Pitsch (165):
Pitsch won one of only four bouts on the night as he defeated a ranked foe, No. 14 Jarrod King, in the tie breaker. Ranked No. 11 in the nation, Pitsch and his Sooner foe each scored one point on an escape during the bout before Pitsch escaped in the tie breaker session after riding out King.

California Road Trip (Cal Poly, CS Bakersfield, CS Fullerton) - Cain Velasquez (HWT):
Velasquez dominated all three of his opponents over the weekend as he picked a three pins against Pac-10 foes. All three of the falls were recorded in the first round to give him a team-high 11 falls on the season.

Oregon State & Oregon (duals) - Jeremy Mendoza (125):
Mendoza was selected as the Wrestler of the Match as he pinned both of his opponents, Eric Stevenson of Oregon State at 6:14 and Beau Malia of Oregon at 4:07. Mendoza is now 26-2 this year and leads the team with a 14-1 record in dual matches and 4-0 against Pac-10 foes in dual competition. He is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 1 in the Pac-10.

NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals - Ryan Bader (197):
Bader went 4-1 on the weekend, upset a Top 10 opponent in commanding fashion (6-0 over No. 10 Matt Delguyd of Northwestern) and pinned his foe from Missouri on the final day to keep our chances of defeating the Tigers two days in a row alive. Bader now has 106 wins in his career and will look to keep climbing the wins list.

Sun Devil Duals (UC Davis/Iowa State) - C.B. Dollaway (184):
Dollaway showed why he is one of the top talents in the nation as he picked up two more victories, including a fall at 1:06 over No. 6 Kurt Backes of Iowa State. After escaping from an early takedown, Dollaway bull-rushed Backes, taking the highly regarded wrestler to his back and sticking him for six points. In Dollaway's three wins this season, two have come against foes ranked in the Top 12 nationally.

Minnesota (dual) - Alex Pavlenko (174) and C.B. Dollaway (184):
Both Pavlenko and Dollaway came away with upset victories at Minnesota, defeating highly ranked opponents to keep the Sun Devils' chance for a team victory alive against the undefeated and No. 2 Golden Gophers. Pavlenko, a redshirt freshman, used three takedowns and a strong effort to upset No. 13 Gabriel Dretsch before Dollaway, who was making his season debut for the Sun Devils, took on No. 6 Roger Kish and scored a 3-0 decision to put the Sun Devils with in four points of the win.

Reno Tournament of Champions - Jeremy Mendoza (125):
Mendoza won the 125 division with a 5-0 record and defeated several highly ranked foes on his way to improving to 17-1 overall this season. Mendoza won one fall, two majors and three decisions, including a 1-0 bout against top-seed and No. 5 nationally ranked Coleman Scott (Oklahoma State) in the final. Mendoza punched his ticket to the finals as he dominated the seventh-ranked wrestler in the nation, John Valez of Northwestern, 11-0.

    Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational -
    Pat Payne (149):
Following a tough 3-1 loss in the opening round of the tournament, Payne rebounded nicely as he won six consolation bouts in a row before reaching the semifinals of the back draw. In those six wins, Payne won two majors and four decisions, outscoring his opponents by a combined 33-1 before dropping a 4-0 decision. Payne would then win his final match by injury default to claim fifth place in the tournament and improve to 11-6 on the season after entering the event 4-4 overall.

    Iowa (dual) -
    Ryan Bader (197):
Although the team would not come out on top of the dual scoring, Bader gave the home fans something to cheer for as he scored a 9-1 major decision in the first home dual of his final season. The senior jumped out early and dominated the mat as he scored four points for the team.

    East Stroudsburg Open -
    Patrick Pitsch (165):
Pitsch got hot early in the East Stroudsburg Open as he bounced back from his lone loss of the season two days earlier to run off six wins in a row and reach the finals of the tournament where he unfortunately took an injury default to settle for second place. Pitsch won his first two bouts by major decision before taking two easy decisions. In the semifinals, he snuck out a 3-2 decision over David Erwin of Penn State to cap his day of competition.

    Lehigh (dual) -
    Cain Velasquez (HWT):
It was a tough dual for the Sun Devils, but Velasquez ended the day on a high note as he scored a 14-4 major decision over Tom Curl. After the day opened with a win at 125, the Mountain Hawks would go on to win the next eight bouts in a row. Velasquez then took the mat and picked up his fourth 'bonus-point' victory in as many matches, giving him two majors, one tech fall and one pin.

Portland State Duals (three duals) -
    Pat Payne (149):
In his first collegiate action after a redshirt season and then a season erased by injury, Payne made a stellar debut for the Sun Devils as he won three duals in dominating fashion. Payne opened the day with an easy 17-0 tech fall over Nick Byrd of Pacific (Ore.) before scoring a 10-3 decision over Jimmy Ulrey of Southern Oregon. In the finale, Payne scored a 12-2 major decision in his first Pac-10 dual as defeated Ben Barch of Portland State.
