Help ASU Women's Basketball Fight Breast Cancer!

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. By purchasing your ticket to the AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic, you will be helping fund breast cancer research, treatment and education in the state of Arizona.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the Phoenix affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Greater Phoenix Oncology Program. The Sun Devils also look to make history when they host the six-time national champion Tennessee Lady Vols, opening Bank One Ballpark's retractable roof and playing under the stars in the first outdoor NCAA basketball game.

For more information, call the AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic hotline at (480) 727-7680.

TEMPE, Ariz. - In an attempt to play the first outdoor college basketball game and raise a significant amount of money for breast cancer research, treatment and education, the Arizona State Sun Devils will take on the NCAA runner-up Tennessee Lady Volunteers in the inaugural AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic Dec. 27, 2000 at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix.

A portion of the proceeds from the game will benefit breast cancer research, treatment and education in the Valley of the Sun with the donation going to the Phoenix affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Greater Phoenix Community Clinical Oncology Program.

"This will be a historic event. This game has the ability to be one of the greatest events in women's basketball history," Arizona State head coach Charli Turner Thorne said. "In addition to being the first outdoor game, we have the opportunity to make an impact by raising a significant amount of money for breast cancer research. When you put all of those things together in a community like Phoenix which has embraced women's basketball, it will be an opportunity for people in the Valley to make a huge statement about supporting women's athletics and a women's cause. The opportunity to raise money for such a tremendous cause has really in my mind become the single most important part of this event."

AstraZeneca, maker of the breast cancer drug Nolvadex (tamoxifen citrate), is the title sponsor for the game designed to raise awareness of breast cancer, the most common type of cancer among women. Health risk assessment screenings by physicians and other educational information will be available at the game.

"We are pleased to be partnered with such a unique event," said Janet Caldwell, AstraZeneca's Oncology Program Manager. "More women are surviving breast cancer today because of early detection and advanced research. We hope that the Hoops for the Cure Classic will help spread the message that risk assessment and early detection are key weapons in the fight against cancer."

The AstraZeneca Hoops for the Cure Classic will be the first outdoor college basketball game as Bank One Ballpark, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, features a state-of-the-art retractable dome roof.

The Sun Devils return two starters from the 1999-2000 team which turned in the team's best season since 1991-92. Last year, ASU advanced to postseason play for the first time since 1992, falling to Colorado State in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament. The Sun Devils return eight letterwinners and will gain the services of two Division I transfers who redshirted the 1999-2000 season and four signees.

Led by 27th-year coach Pat Summitt, the Tennessee Lady Vols will return all five starters from a team that went 33-4 last season and fell to Connecticut in the NCAA championship game. The six-time national champion Lady Vols also add a top five recruiting class heading into next season.

"We are tremendously excited about the support we have already received for this event," Turner Thorne said. "We are thrilled to have AstraZeneca as our title sponsor, and a number of other people have already pledged their support to this historic event. One of those people has been Marty Shultz, vice president for governmental operations at Pinnacle West. This event would not be happening without him."
