Sun Devil Soccer Defeats Northern Arizona 4-0

    Aug. 24, 2012

    Final Stats

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Junior forward Devin Marshall and freshman forward Cali Farquharson scored two goals each to lead the Arizona State women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Northern Arizona on Friday night.

After failing to score a goal in losses last week at Cal State Northridge and at San Diego State, the Sun Devils (1-2) were clicking on all cylinders on Friday night. ASU outshot the Lumberjacks 30-9, including a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Sun Devils struck first in the 16th minute when Marshall headed in a corner kick that was struck perfectly by senior Courtney Tinnin.

Marshall, whose two goals tied her single-game career high, scored her second goal less than two minutes into the second half as she got behind the defense and found herself in a one-on-one situation. Marshall's initial attempt was thwarted with a diving save by Lumberjack goalkeeper Natalie Gilbertson, but Gilbertson could not prevent the goal as Marshall was in perfect position to score on the rebound.

Farquharson, who led ASU with nine shots, was constantly attacking throughout the evening. Although she was denied with some outstanding saves by Gilbertson, she kept pressing and that persistence would pay off in the 84th minute when she took a pass from Taylor McCarter and found the lower right corner of the net to put ASU up 3-0.

Farquharson would strike again in the 88th minute when she got free on a breakaway and beat Gilbertson with a shot to the lower left corner to make the final count 4-0.

Chandler Morris made four saves in goal for ASU. She came through with an outstanding individual effort to prevent an NAU goal with under 15 minutes left that would have cut ASU's lead to 2-1. Instead, the Sun Devils continued on the attack with two goals in the final seven minutes, silencing NAU's school record crowd of 2,207.
