Since coming to ASU in 2007, Sun Devil Soccer head coach Kevin Boyd has taken his team on an annual preseason camping trip. In addition to being a short respite from the first week of training, the trip serves as an excellent team building exercise in which the squad shares a variety of experiences that bring them even closer together for the season ahead. Senior Aissa Sanchez recaps this year's trip, which took place this past weekend.
An eventful camping trip in Cottonwood, Ariz., was all the team needed to kick off a season that has the potential to explode with greatness.
The trip was filled with various bonding activities that were exactly what the group needed to get the ball rolling. From the search parties sent out to find a lake to swim in, to the late night campfire talks, all 30 of us became closer and left us itching (and no not from the bugs) for the season to begin.
I personally got goose bumps after the team discussion about how historical this season is going to be. We started off taking care of business with the team rules discussion and it was very encouraging. After that began the fun. The newcomer sing-off was one of the activities that supplied side-aching laughter, especially when Liz Schulze had a minute-long routine with her song that left us in tears.
In addition to that, this year's meals were organized by different classes which made for full bellies and pure satisfaction. The Mexican dinner, traditional burger lunch, and breakfast burritos that were prepared were by far the perfect camping meals.
As we all forgot about reality in our own little world, we enjoyed each other's company, shared secrets, and became sisters.
This trip was easily named the "Best Camping Trip Ever."
