The 2013 Sun Devil softball team took the field on Saturday, October 20th, for the annual alumni game. On a day which had the Sun Devil alumni team marred by the absence of a starting pitcher, a former ASU All-American infielder stepped up in a big way. Mindy Cowles, a 2008 graduate, started in the circle for the alumni team, going five and two-thirds innings and holding the current Sun Devil’s potent offense in check all afternoon.
The star-studded alumni team was headed by two additional former All-Americans Katelyn Boyd, Kaylyn Castillo, and also welcomed back Lesley Rogers, Mandy Urfer, Kristen Miller, Jackie Vazquez and Ashley Muenz, who together, kept the game close all afternoon as the game ended in a seven to seven tie. Dallas Escobedo started for the current Sun Devils, working the first four innings and punching out eleven former Sun Devils.
Head coach Clint Myers gave every player on his roster an at-bat during the game in an effort to spark some enthusiasm into his club. However, coach Myers was complimentary of his former players after the game, talking of the alumni’s infectious energy that sparked them to tie his current team during the seven-inning affair. The alumni had over thirty former players show up to cheer for and support their alma mater, and was a great way to demonstrate to the young team of 2013, what it means to be a Sun Devil.
