ANN ARBOR, MICH -
The Arizona State women's tennis team opened up fall play Friday afternoon with strong wins on both the doubles and singles courts at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The Sun Devils traveled with four student athletes to compete in the flight style tournament.
"I thought we came out and played pretty well in the doubles," head coach Sheila McInerney said.
The Sun Devils went 1-1 in doubles play, with freshman - senior pairing of Desirae Krawczyk and Hannah James defeating Alexandra Cercone and Sofie Oyen of Florida, 8-3.
"Hannah (James) and Desirae (Krawczyk) were very solid in their match as they both served well and made few unforced errors," McInerney said.
And although the scoring was the same for the second pairing of Sun Devils, Joanna Smith and Stephanie Vlad fell to the Florida pairing of Danielle Collins and Olivia Janowicz, 8-3. However, Coach McInerney does still see the positives in an early season loss like this one.
"Joanna (Smith) and Stephanie (Vlad) played better than the score indicated but their serves let them down. It's hard to win in doubles if you are struggling to get first serves in play."
On the singles courts ASU did see some early season struggles. Freshman Sun Devil Stephanie Vlad was the only ASU competitor to win a singles match on the day.
"Stephanie played well and beat a very good player," McInerney said. Vlad defeated Mimi Nguyen of Michigan 6-3, 6-1.
"The singles play was a but of a struggle for us with the exception of Stephanie's match. Hannah (James), Joanna (Smith) and Desirae (Krawczyk) were too inconsistent in their matches to pull out the wins," McInerney said.
The Sun Devils will look to improve upon their mistakes in singles play on Saturday against Iowa.
"All in all it was good to get back to competing and we are all looking forward to tomorrow's matches," McInerney said.
The Wolverine Invitational continues on Saturday (Sept. 22), with doubles starting at 10 a.m. in Ann Arbor.
