Arizona State Tennis Closes Out First Day at the SW ITA Regional

    Oct. 19, 2012

    SAN DIEGO -

The Arizona State Sun Devils women's tennis team was able to snag one win in the first day of play at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regionals hosted by San Diego State on Thursday afternoon in San Diego, Calif.

ASU Freshman Stephanie Vlad was the only victorious Sun Devil of the day, defeating Franziska Goettsching of University of California Irvine 6-2, 6-2.

"Stephanie played very well and made it tough on her opponent as she did not make any unforced errors and atattcked when she created an opportunity," head coach Sheila McInerney said.

"She has a tough match tomorrow against the top seeded Robin Anderson of UCLA, but I know she is looking forward to it."

Veteran players Joanna Smith and Leighann Sahagun both fell to their opponents on the singles courts, Smith in two sets and Sahagun in three.

"Joanna (Smith) and Leighann (Sahagun) struggled today with way too many unforced errors so they both had a disapointing result but will get another match tomorrow in the back draw," McInerney said.
