Sun Devil Tennis Closes Play at USTA/ITA Southwest Regional

    Oct. 20, 2012

    SAN DIEGO, Calif. -

The Arizona State Sun Devils women's tennis team competed in their final matches on Saturday afternoon at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Tournament hosted by San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif.

The tournament marked the third pre-season tournament the Sun Devils have competed in thus far. Previously, Arizona State competed in the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. and the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.

On the doubles courts the Sun Devil pairing of Stephanie Vlad and Leighann Sahagun defeated the fourth ranked pairing of Skylar Morton and Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA, 8-6 to start the morning.

"She (Leighann Sahagun) played in four singles matches and three doubles matches this weekend so it was a good tournament for her," Arizona State University head coach Sheila McInerney said.

The ASU pairing fell in the next round to Karoline Rozenberg and Ebba Unden of LBSU, 8-3.

In the singles consilation bracket, Joanna Smith fell to Kristine Kouyoumijan of LMU 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Leighann Sahagun withdrew from her match against Cara Brown of USD, stepping off the court at 6-2, 6-1 (wd).

The Sun Devils will continue pre-season play in Flushing, New York at the National Individual Indoor tournament in Novemeber.
