Volleyball Falls To No. 4 Stanford to Close 2010 Regular Season

    Nov. 26, 2010

    Box Score

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Even with a valiant effort from Sarah Reaves and Erica Wilson the fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal were too much to handle as Alix Klineman hit .500 with 18 kills to lead the Cardinal to a 3-0 sweep of ASU. Stanford took a 25-15, 25-15 and 25-25 win to end ASU’s regular season. The Cardinals move to 24-3 and 15-3 in Pac-10 play while ASU finishes the season 13-18 and 7-11 in conference play.

First set saw the Sun Devils hanging tough through the beginning of the match, holding Stanford to an 11-11 tie through the set with Sarah Reaves swinging .500 with four kills. The Cardinal turned it on after though as they broke away, hitting a nasty .667 in the set with Alix Klineman leading the way to a 25-15 lead.

Stanford exploded out of the gate in the second set to ratchet up a 7-1 lead before ASU took a time out to compose themselves, but the Cardinal were on an unstoppable roll as they pushed it to 11-1 before ASU could answer.  The Maroon and Gold didn’t have an overall answer as the Cardinal repeated their first score 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Coming into the third set, ASU made some quick adjustments to grab a quick 5-2 lead though Stanford kept on their heels throughout, tying it at eight apiece. ASU battled ahead taking a 12-10 lead hitting .412 against the potent Cardinal defense. Stanford hung tough though as they battled out nine tie scores and three lead changes to squeak out a 25-23 win.

The loss ends the Sun Devil Volleyball season, which included huge wins over three top 10 teams and a final 7-11 Pac-10 record.
