McGrath Scores 100th Goal as Water Polo Downs Indiana, 12-3

    Jan. 27, 2008

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 11 Arizona State University water polo saw four players score multiple goals and the Sun Devils went on a 7-0 run to defeat Indiana, 12-3, Sunday morning in the Michigan Invitational being played inside the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich. The victory, ASU's second in a row, improved the Sun Devils' record to 2-1 on the year while the Hoosiers slipped to 1-2 overall.

Addison McGrath led the way on offense for the second came in a row, this time netting a career-high-tying four goals. McGrath's second three-plus goal game in a row and 16th over her career gave the junior 101 career goals, making her just the third Sun Devil to net at least 100 goals, placing her behind career-leader Katie Hedley (134) and runner-up Ashley Bower (117). An honorable mention All-American last year, McGrath now has eight goals scored in three games this year.

Katy Lawlor netted three goals of her own to bring her season total to five (one each in the first two games) and moved into a tie for seventh on the all-time goal scorers in ASU history with 58. Traci Aparicio scored her first two goals of the season while Kelly Phelps added a pair of her own. Rookie Nikki Unbehaun, a native of Ann Arbor, scored the first goal of her collegiate career to round out the Sun Devils' scoring.

Goalie Caylinn Wallace kept the Hoosiers off the scoreboard for much of the game as she stopped 16 shots for the second game in a row. Freshman Kaitlyn Morris saw action in her second game of the weekend, stopping one shot.

Both teams opened the game with a pair of goals and a 2-2 tie heading into the second quarter where the Sun Devils opened a lead with two goals to zero by the Hoosiers. Leading 4-2 at the intermission, the Sun Devils extended their lead with a five more unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead into the final quarter. In the fourth, ASU added three goals to UI's one for the final nine-goal margin.

The Sun Devils will close out their stay in Ann Arbor later today as they face No. 14 UC San Diego at 1:50 p.m.
