TEMPE -- Nine members of the Arizona State University water polo team were honored as the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPA) released its annual All-Academic Awards, ACWPA Executive Director Larry Sanders announced on Wednesday.
The All-Academic awards are separated into three tiers based upon the overall GPA of student-athletes. An `Outstanding' merit level is granted to those with a GPA ranging from 3.71 to 4.00, a `Superior' honor to those with a 3.41 to 3.70 GPA and an `Excellent' rating to those with a GPA between 3.20 an 3.40.
Four Sun Devils were honored with an Outstanding Merit, led by sophomore goalkeeper Ianeta Hutchinson. Hutchinson, who hails from Auckland, New Zealand, remains perfect in the classroom with a 4.00 GPA in psychology.
During the 2012 season, Hutchinson was second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 282 saves while moving to second on ASU's career charts in the all-time save category.
Mariam Salloum finished her career with a 3.85 GPA in political science to also earn Outstanding Honors. In addition to her work in the classroom, Salloum finished the season ranked in the top-three in the school's three major career statistical categories (goals, assists, points) and was an honorable mention All-American in the process.
Salloum became just the third Sun Devil to be honored during all four years of her eligibility, following the likes of Nikki Unbehaun and Bonnie Miles. Salloum earned an Outstanding selection in three of her four years at ASU.
Alicia Brightwell, a first-team All-American and first-team All-MPSF selection also earned Outstanding accolades as she posted a 3.83 GPA in general studies. Brightwell finished the 2012 campaign with the school's second-most single season goals scored and paced the conference in both goals scored and goals per game.
Freshman Anna Kertes rounded out the Outstanding selections with a 3.76 GPA as an exploratory major. Kertes finished the year as a member of the MPSF All-Newcomer Team and with the second-most freshman goals scored in ASU history.
Earning `Superior' All-Academic honors for the Sun Devils were juniors Amanda Young (3.62/Anthropology) and Shannon Haas (3.54/Early Childhood Educations & Family and Human Development). Haas was a third team All-America selection this season and is on pace to rocket up the record books in several categories as a senior captain next season.
Rounding out the ASU selections were Annabelle Carter (3.37/Interdisciplinary Studies), Liz Kreek (3.22/Anthropology) and Makenzy Fowler (3.21/Family and Human Development), who all earned "Excellent" All-Academic nods.
Overall, 35 Sun Devils have earned ACWPC All-Academic honors in their careers in Tempe with a total of 62 accolades combined. Of those 31 women, 15 were honored two or more times in their careers.
